1. First, watch the video lecture for this week
2. Next, read the required readings for this week.
1. Derrida, J (2003) 'The Deaths of Roland Barthes' in The Work of Mourning, University of Chicago Press, pp.31- 68
2. Barthes, R (1979) Camera Lucida: Reflections on Photography, 2010 edn. Farrar, Straus and Giroux

3. Third, contemplate these questions on your own or with some friends
1. In her lecture, Tara McLellan mentions Julian Stallbrasses’s prediction that the wave of amateur photography will bring on a "wave of blandness". Do you believe this has happened or will happen in the near future?
2. In her paper Killing Time: New Memory and Smartphone Photography, Tara McLennan argues, “prosthetic connections with the smartphone have rendered photographic engagement one of fleeting surface encounters.” With the advancement in technology and the importance of immediacy, has the art of photography and the skill of the profession been diminished?
3. What role does the punctum play in the truth and authenticity of a photograph?
4. Do you think Instagram as a whole is temporary or do you see its popularity continuing and if so, why?

4. Then, check out these case studies and given the lecture and the required readings for the week, answer the questions below.
1. In Shots of Awe’s Youtube video, “The Instagram Generation” he claims the present is rich but it is gone. Moments are there but all you have left is how you choose to remember that moment. In turn, we become artists and architects of our mental narratives. We decide how we remember things and how we italicize the memory. Do you think we are deciding who we are and how we are living our lives through Instagram by broadcasting our images to the world?
2. Digital images and rhetoric: When Instagram photos are put through a filter they can be changed by means of brightness, saturation or clarity. Play around with filters and discuss with friends to determine what common feelings different filters create among people.
